Gingrich and Grandiosity

The Big Lie Souffle and other GOP delicacies.

I am old enough to remember Newt Gingrich in action, back in the day.

He was and is a very, very clever liar. He drops a lie, coats it immediately with some kind of clever extraction of some kind of well-known truth, and then folds them together into a puffed up Big Lie Souffle. It is always smooth and easy to swallow, so Low Information Voters just gulp the whole thing down. In one sound bite.

Grrrrr.

But the new thing (at least to me) in Gingrich's public mouthings is his use of the superlative. Everything is the most, the worst, the best, in the history of the world, in the history of the United States, in his lifetime. There are no gradations at all. And, of course, low information voters swallow that sweet tidbit in one gulp. It is really maddening.

I propose a new drinking game for future debates. Every time Newtie makes one of his superlative statements, we all have a huge, historical, biggest in our lifetimes swig of whatever.

Well, at least he doesn't use the word “frankly” anymore in every single sentence that comes out of his mouth.

Alas, I, too, am old enough to remember Mr. Breakfast at Tiffanys (I love Olbermann for coming up with that one).  Of COURSE he is a clever liar.  But not that clever.  He did get caught, after all.  And it does look as thought the ex-wife is hauling out some of that dirty laundry.  Nice.  Let’s watch for Jon Stewart.  I think he’ll have a nice treat for us real soon!
