...It’s People…People!

by Gary Phillips

A brief hoax gained and lost ground yesterday when a couple of blogs such as geekologie reported that Kentucky Fried Chicken was selectively test marketing the Skinwich, a sandwich of five layers of KFC's fried chicken skin, cheese, secret sauce and bacon.  It turns out to not be true, but as these are the fine folks who have brought us the Double Down, a "sandwich" of two fried chicken patties for the buns with cheese, secret sauce and bacon between them, the Skinwich didn't seem so far-fetched.

This is a time when a huckster like Glenn Beck has an audience, when teabaggers and birthers not only believe all manner of crazy shit about the president and reality in general.  But that their ideas readily move from the fringe to center stage as actual policy discussions - revoking the 14th Amendment; sleeper agent anchor babies; the Muslim community center planned near Ground Zero is a mosque at Ground Zero (these hallowed grounders ignoring the existence of the Ground Zero Pussycat Lounge strip club and the Ground Zero Thunder Lingerie shop also in the vicinity); concentration camps for undocumented workers; believing in the Skinwich, and for that matter believing it's a plot to black people (I added that bit, but you can imagine if the hoax went on for a few more hours it would have been spun), then anything goes.

In the remake of Soylent Green I'm going to pitch, my movie begins where the original ends - with Charlton Heston's cop being carried out by goons as he hollers, "Soylent Green is people...it's people!"  Fade out, fade up to a tearful, red-eyed Glenn Beck type looking directly into the camera who repeats this dire warning and bolstered by the nut job media echo chamber, enrages the ya-hoos to rise up not against big corp but against those filthy illegals running their kidnap rings.  They're skinning the God-fearing for their forbidden skinwiches they eat to steal the white man's power and grounding 'em up to be mixed with soy for the green squares of protein. They feed their anchor babies.  It'll do gangbusters.
