A World-Class Unelected Mayor, A World-Class Unkempt City
by Tony Chavira
It's bad enough that the nation of South Africa is actually in trouble, with lower-than-expected World Cup attendance anticipated, racial tension building after the killing of a former white supremacist (and the fact that the ruling party still sing songs of killing the Dutch white settlers), and national bonds in South Africa hitting a 13-month low despite infrastructure investments... but it's largest city, Johannesberg, somehow has a clearly corrupt and inefficient Mayor.
In this interview with the Times, he's clearly mislead by the interviewer but ends up admitting a plentitude of ineptitudes anyway. Nothing I write can really do any justice to this interview, just keep in mind that people have to live in this city of potholes, bad public transportation and an inefficient sewage drainage system.
