An Incautious God and His Thunderbolts

by Jim Washburn

On July 12, 2007, Reuters photographer Namir Noor-Eldeen and driver Saeed Chmagh were killed in Baghdad during an “engagement” between the group of men they were walking with and two US Apache helicopters. Through the Freedom of Information Act, Reuters pressed to see the video footage of the altercation. Three years later the video has yet to be released to them, but the website Wikileaks has obtained a copy from a confidential source.

It’s difficult to second-guess the decisions of those facing danger, but watch this footage fullscreen, and see how many AK-47s you count before the helicopters start firing.

This is the sort of war we’ve been fighting for nine years now, with copters, bombers and drone planes, and God must be awfully busy, sorting out the innocent bodies from the bad.
