Before You Go, Here’s Something To Get Really Mad About This Weekend
by Tony Chavira
It's obviously Friday, but before you head out for a relaxing weekend of smoking medicinal marijuana and watching your TIVO'd Mad Men episodes, I want you to read what the Catholic Archdiocese is trying to do over in Washington D.C.
The title of the article: Catholic archdiocese gives ultimatum to D.C.
Washington - The Catholic Archdiocese of Washington said Wednesday that it would be unable to continue the social service programs it runs for the District of Columbia if the city refused to change a proposed same-sex marriage law.
The threat could affect tens of thousands of people the church helps with adoption, homelessness and healthcare.
Under the legislation, which the City Council is expected to pass next month, religious organizations would not be required to perform or make space available for same-sex weddings. But they would have to obey laws prohibiting discrimination against gays and lesbians.
Fearful that they could be forced, among other things, to extend employee benefits to same-sex married couples, church officials said they would have no choice but to abandon their contracts with the city.
"If the city requires this, we can't do it," said Susan Gibbs, spokeswoman for the archdiocese. "The city is saying in order to provide social services, you need to be secular. For us, that's really a problem."
So the Catholic Archdiocese wants to hold homeless people as hostages until they get their preferred legislation passed? That's called kidnapping. Or possibly terrorism... right in our capital.
Want to cut off social services for DC's homeless, Catholic Archdiocese? Fine. Don't bother complaining when everyone begins lobbying to eliminate your tax-exempt status though. No social services means no social favors, jerks.
You'd never see the LA Archdiocese try and get away with this... everyone here would be too pissed off. And what about Jesus? Man, he hung out with poor people. Gay people too.

Comments
Tony: Thank you for bringing this prejudiced, uncaring and devious action to our attention. However, I am not “mad” or “pissed off” as you suggest I should be. I am deeply disappointed in an institution that I previously held in deep respect for the good works they used to do.
