Big, Little, Simple, Sweet

by Donna Schoenkopf

I have been wafting through the ether of the Internet for a few days just looking at homes human beings have built here in our fair country. These homes range from the obscenely grandiose, to the sweetly simple.

Let’s start big, shall we?

Biggest Homes

These monstrosities start at 50,000+ square feet and go all the way up to 110,000+ square feet. They are viewed from the air and ground. They all have a similar quality -- they are bunker-like, and perhaps that is the best way to think of them. They are examples of waste and unconsciousness about the Earth and their fellow man. There was not one solar panel or wind turbine to show that they tread lightly on the Earth. Bill Gates’ home shows the most sensitivity as it is partially earth embedded.

Tiniest House

(At least that’s how it’s billed on YouTube.) It’s sweet and its builder is sweet, too.

Simple House

I love this Maui home. And I love all the crap in the yard.

Sweet House

Don’t have a lot of space? Try cutting off the corners of your house like this Japanese architect did and remove as many walls as you can and voila! A house of light and space. The video does have a brief ad for HGTV, but it goes away quickly.
