City & Design ala USC
by Tony Chavira
If you've got the time this weekend, consider sitting back, making some popcorn and maybe skipping about 30 minutes ahead into USC's recent panel entitled "Arts and Architecture in the Public Sphere of Cities." Assuming that we can, in fact, have a rational Habermas-defined public sphere in any of our cities, USC put on a good show and there's some interesting discussion to be had regarding the place and use of design in the public sphere.
Anyway, here's the YouTube description for the uploaded video, jam-packed with fancy organizations and titles:
Joshua Decter, director of the Master of Public Art Studies Program at USC, organized and moderated this event exploring art and architecture in the public sphere, and unorthodox ways of engaging the public. The panel featured Anne Pasternak, president and artistic director of Creative Time, New York; Los Angeles based installation artist Doug Aitken; and Peter Zellner, Los Angeles-based architect and founding principal of ZELLNERPLUS. The event was presented as part of Visions and Voices, and was held on February 2, 2009, at the Davidson Conference Center.
ALSO, Thursday April 30th USC's Center for Sustainable Cities will be hosting an event called "Cities and Climate Change: A Solutions Oriented Conference." Sadly (but not that sadly) I'll be at the AIA convention in San Francisco, but if anyone wants to go and blog about it, let me know!
Happy weekend!
