Double Down
by Gary Phillips
As I've mentioned in my previous blog post, the book tour, the hustle if you will, concerning Orange County Noir has begun. I gotta sell, baby, sell.
Last night several of us, including contributors to Los Angeles Noir 2: The Classics, out at the same time from Akashic, were at the lovely independent West Hollywood bookstore, Book Soup. We spoke a little about our respective stories and read brief excerpts. There was a nice turnout, mostly friends of one of OC Noir's contributors, Larry Maddox, and we sold a few books and signed stock - that is the other copies of our titles the store has.
We've also taken our road show to Orange County as me and two of the other contributors were at Latitude 33 bookstore this past Tuesday in Laguna Beach, and I travel again behind the Orange Curtain this Saturday to do a panel at Literary Orange at UC Irvine. But this crisscrossing the geography also got me to thinking about food. When you're out and about invariably you're having some chow or a beer at some eatery located close to a given bookstore. Like after the gig at Book Soup, several of us retreated to Pi on Sunset, a Lebanese restaurant a few doors west of the store for a nosh.
But what if a book store is near a Kentucky Fried Chicken in some dang mall way out who knows where? Will I be able to resist the Double Down? It's a sans bread sandwich but that doesn't mean it skimps on the calories. Oh, no. This bad rascal is two fried chicken filets substituting the bread, with Monterey Jack and Pepper Jack cheese, two slices of bacon and secret sauce in between. Sweet Lord. Who the hell at KFC came up with this and were they on crack? I imagine you can also get that with a jumbo-sized fountain drink as well. Or maybe I'll wash my Double Down with a swing from my Hello Kitty wine. I kid you not, there is such a beverage, and it comes in a small bottle for easy carry by the youngsters.
Wow. Turns out food is noir.
