Greywater
by Donna Schoenkopf
I have a thing about water. I love it. I worry about it. About it being polluted. About there not being enough of it.
Consequently, I have constructed a really rudimentary greywater drainage system for my washing machine. I also need to take some of the burden off my poor septic system. (Did you know you use about 40 gallons of water to do a load of wash? Did you???)
I live waaaaaaaaay out in the country, so I'm pretty sure I'm okay as far as the constable showing up.
I have some neat videos of greywater here.
First one is a simple (very) system.

There are villages in Bangladesh which use sand filters on a large scale. The only problem with these sand filters is that you have to replace them about every two years because of bacteria.
And here's a cool video on reed bed water filtration. I became even more of a wetlands lover after visiting Arcata, California and standing in a paradise of plant life which filtered greywater without a single mechanical device. You should have seen the bird life there. Swooping flocks of graceful birds, bird calls everywhere. Wow. What an experience. Anyway, this video is really basic and short. And good.

Finally, if you are really, really into doing it at home in a city, here is a guerilla greywater video just for you. It requires digging and pipes and stuff.

Remember. Water IS life. Really.
