Modernest: Like FourStory for the Home
by Nathan Walpow
Do you love good design, good food, and good wine? And good movies, good books, and good art? Do you have a home? If you answered “yes” to most of the above (six out of seven for me; I hate wine), you might well love modernest. At the moment it’s a blog, but soon they’re going to be making and selling cool stuff too.
They’ve got Meatless Monday recipes, and eco tips, and soon they’ll have unbleached cotton tote bags, silkscreened with original designs and made in America. It’s like American Apparel for your home.
Yesterday’s story is about the Be a Flexitarian campaign, which the food service industry is putting together, ostensibly to make us healthier and be kind to animals and cool stuff like that. I figure the real reason behind anything the food service industry does is making money, but if it’ll help us kill a few fewer animals, I’m all for it.
(But if I meet you, don’t call yourself a flexitarian. You either eat animals or you don’t. And while I’m at it, eating fish excludes you from vegetarianism. Bivalves too. And when I say I’m a vegetarian, if one more person says, “Oh, I hardly ever eat red meat,” well, there's no telling what I'll do.)

hi nathan,
i totally agree that the definitions of what one eats and does not eat can get on one’s nerves. and while clearly, the “be a flexitarian” campaign is good p/r for the company, i am all for anything that helps people to realize that not eating meat (even just once a week) is a very simple thing they can do - benefiting not only themselves, but the planet. it’s small steps towards real change…
thanks for the shout out - site should be live this month!
