National Donut Day
by Gary Phillips
I have a tear in my eye from joy...for today, June 4, is National Donut Day. This fine holiday has been the first Friday in June since 1938 when the Salvation Army as a fundraiser, paid homage to the women of their ranks who served donuts and coffee to the doughboys of World War I. Teresa Mears on the Smart Spending site noted, "So many soldiers planned to open doughnut shops after the war that the military published a book on the subject, according to John T. Edge's definitive history, Donuts: An American Passion."
My private eye character Ivan Monk owns a donut stand, Continental Donuts, in the Crenshaw District. The name of the joint is a riff on the Continental Detective Agency created by Dashiell Hammett. I understand that Krispy Kreme, the one near me is on Crenshaw Boulevard at King, is offering a free sinker, no other purchase necessary. So eat hearty. To paraphrase Col. Kilgore, "I love the smell of frying donuts in the morning. It's the smell of victory."
Cue the "Flight of the Valkyries."
