Project by Jiri Barta

by Tony Chavira

Jiri Barta, the Czech master of stop-motion animation, shot this film "Project" in 1981 that's interesting for a few reasons: first, you get to see the illustrator draft a building elevation the old fashioned, hand-drawn way; second, you get an impression for how presentations were put together with little drawings and interesting things; third, you understand how some developments get labeled "the projects" and end up being mega-slums; and fourth, you get an impression for how unregulated, unintelligent sprawl can ruin a good urban space.  We're really lucky that it's online, it's an amazing feat of creative animation:

FourStory Moral of the Film: Stupid urbanism breeds droll uniformity.  Conversely, smart urbanism breeds creativity!  Go smart density go!
