Skyscrapers of the Future!
by Tony Chavira
eVolo have announced the winners of their 2010 Skyscraper Competition and the renderings these firms have come up with are totally insane. I repeat. Totally. Insane.

I have no idea what to think of this project, entitled "Vertical Prison." Designed by a group of Malaysian architecture students, they actually sough to design how exactly you'd go about creating a prison city in the sky.

"Water Purification Skyscraper in Jakarta" was second place, and I suppose it's name speaks for itself. Seeking to purify and repair the Ciliwung River habitat in Indonesia, the designers created more of a machine than a building: something to gather all waste and recycle it back into the buildings eco-system. You heard me right: "building's eco-system."

Coming in third place is "Nested Skyscraper in Tokyo," developed by two American architects to try out different kinds of building materials liek carbon sleeves and fiber-laced concrete. Not everything has to be made of brick, I'm sure you know.

There are a few special mentions, but my personal favorite is called "Sky Table" from a Russian architect with an inclination to integrate a gigantic eco-bridge with a skyscraper to integrate urbanism as best he can with the surrounding community from a canopy level. Sort of like a rainforest, from what it looks like.
Anyway, plenty more to gawk at here!
