“The Late Great Planet Earth”
by Tony Chavira
If you get a free hour and a half to waste some energy by celebrating Earth Day on your computer, check out the film I’ve embedded below called The Late Great Planet Earth. Based on the book by Hal Lindsey, it’s the same sort of story you can expect from any “the world is going to end tomorrow, run for your lives” kinda documentaryish flick. PaleoFuture’s comments on this film are too good to try and rip off:
Apocalypse porn of the 1970s, like The Late Great Planet Earth and Future Shock, push the idea that “my generation” is special. Late Great contends that many people of the past have predicted the end of the world is near, (and though the world is obviously still here), our generation is special! Our generation will truly see the End Times!
The Late Great Planet Earth, like Future Shock, was hosted by Orson Welles. I’m not sure if Welles was just cashing a paycheck or if he believed what he was selling, but as we’ve seen repeatedly on this blog people seem particularly receptive to apocalyptic messages during tough economic times.
Despite this, we all clearly know that our generation is special ... if only in that if we don’t try and negate CO2, the next generation will be the one that suffers. So I guess that means that the next generation is more special than we are. Meh, whatever. Anyway, check out the flick and enjoy Orson Welles’ voice! Happy Earth Day, and if you get a chance also check out Future Shock (which is just as ridiculous, of course)!
