They Got Me Again!

by Donna Schoenkopf

I just got hooked in again to Hughesnet.  I swore I would never do it, but my back was against the wall.

It began with a wavering signal from my satellite dish.  When I checked out my satellite status I could see that my receiver wasn't locking and every few seconds a new number would come up.  This went on for days.  (I sometimes just refuse to accept bad news.  What can I say...I'm an optimist.)

But deadlines were approaching and I neeeeeeeeded my computer to be linked back up to the world...so I called Hughesnet.  Again.

They had been out here a couple of months back and repaired the dish by replacing a connector on the line and were going to charge me ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY FIVE DOLLARS for five minutes work.  So I called and bitched and hollered and moaned and got my service for free after I was that I would never, ever get free services calls again.  As long as I lived.

Well.  Hmmmm.   That's when the damn thing went on the fritz again.  So I called Hughesnet and told them to CANCEL MY CONTRACT.  GOODBYE AND GOOD RIDDANCE.  But the very nice man in "Billing" gave me a FREE service call, just for staying a customer and then Jim, the repairman came and told me that he could upgrade my speed for a mere one-time $40 and that I could get repair service for $16 a month with his company and I said.......yes.

But now my computer, not my satellite, is broken.  And now I have just basic stuff on my computer, I've lost all my documents, I lose my internet connection easily, there is no memory in the address bar, I don't have my automatic fill-in for documents, I lost my screensaver, my "Works" word processing program, there is lots of freezing, and when I reopen the computer after turning it off I have to start from scratch.

I have to take it in next Monday, not today, because, of course, this is the Easter Season and nobody's at the store.  So I am cobbling this little tale of woe on my very minimalized computer.

I am going to stop now because I am weary and feeling disheartened.

Goodbye.
