What I Want to Know

by Donna Schoenkopf

Dear Fourstory Writers,

I am so excited about your upcoming trip to Cuba.

Please check out the following places and people and things for me:

THE SUGAR CANE FIELDS -- I would like to know whether young people still go to the fields for the cane harvest.  I've heard they fall in love there and dance and sing around the campfires at night.

CUBAN NATIONAL DISASTER PLAN -- I've heard it's the best in the world.  Can you rummage around and get some information on it?  What makes it so effective?  How did they do it?

THE PEOPLE -- I've heard they are incredibly friendly and happy.  Is it true?

THE MALECON -- Would you walk along it and tell me what it's like?

THE CARS -- Could you describe your favorites?  Their colors and their parts?

CUBAN DOCTORS AND MEDICAL SERVICES -- Could you find out about Cuban doctors in Haiti and other parts of Latin America?  And is Cuba still helping people in Africa?  What are the local medical clinics like?

SCHOOLS -- Could you visit one and see what it's like?

ELIAN -- How's he doing?

YOUR SENSES -- Could you record the sights of the city and the countryside?  The sounds of the music and the chatter in the street?   The smells of the food and the sea?  And the feel of the air on your skin?

FIDEL -- Could you say hello for me, and tell him that I'm proud of him and what he's done for the people of Cuba?

Please give Cuba a great big warm hug for me.

And tell her I love her.

Thanks.
